setup your computer as a server. But I do not reccomend this unless you have atleast a 100kilobit upload speed. I mean thats the bare minimum or you will have a realy bad lag and even then do not try to get much more then 2 or 3 active users at a time. Your comp would also have to be on 24/7 and you would have to devote recources to the webserver. You should just go with a host unless you can run a separate comp as a dedicated server in my opinion. There are plenty of free hosts out there just look for your self and don't be lazy. www.brinkster.com www.freewebs.com www.mylittlehost.com www.flatface.net those are 4 free ones with no ads.

If I were you, i wouldn't consider making your PC a server, search for a free web host. I've used:

www.freewebs.com

Fairly reliable, large amount of space. On the downside you can only upload one file at a time unless you pay for FTP access.

No pop-up ads, one small line of text on your site (not too painful considering the hosting is completely free!)

Hope that helps

I also use free webz, and you can pay $9 and get their premium hosting service for a month. So if you have alot of files to upload, you get ftp for a month.

if you shop around you can get reseller hosting for less.

I found a great free asp.net webserver app. Microsoft released with the webmatrix project, something called webmatrix server. It is very simple to use and it is free. You will need a windows nt based os but if you have one of those you have your server, you can easily setup smtp, and you can setup ftp for remote access too with ease. But like I said before do not run your comp as a server unless you have a rather high upload speed or something like atleast 2 to 300 kilobits or you are on a t1, and make sure you have a lot of processor recources available because running a server side language is going to draw on the system and if you try to game while someone visits your site, they are going to have to deal with lag and so will you.

Try http://www.influxhost.com for really inexpensive hosting. They have one-time-only hosting, where you pay a small fee and get hosting for life. Check it out. Great alternative to hosting on your own comp.

thats great if you want to run a porn site. http://www.web1000.com/compare.htm . Theye give you very little server side capabilites and they did not mention much about their bandwidth, which probably means its capped real low. They also claimed to be the only us free host with no ads, I can name a bunch off the top of my head.
www.brinkster.com www.freewebs.com www.mylittlehost.com www.flatface.net http://europe.webmatrixhosting.net just to name a few that I have looked at in the past. There are many more, you notice the ones I liusted for the most part are asp and asp.net hosts, thats just the technology I use, but since php is free I bet I could find you some free php hosts that are decent too with no ads.

well you get your money's worth ..
plus you do not HAVE TO run a porn site

I have just created 2 sites : 1 of them is a huge file , almost taking the entire 50 Meg and it is not fast but enjoyable ..
absolutely no ads

The ones you mention do not offer this much space and I believe that was a consideration for the thread starter ....

ill be damned, brinkster must have just started doing ads the other day because I was recently at a brinkster site that I know was free that did not have any. This just makes me hate them anymore. That have ads but they can't even host asp.net properly. Their service sucks, no global files, no email, low bandwidth, no code behinds, and a webfarm that will produce #500 errors because the iis is screwed up on half of thier servers.

My site (http://lazyape.filetap.com) is hosted by http://www.angeltowns.com .

You should check them out - 50MB space, SSI, no ads whatsoever, and it's all completely free. I think there's a 1MB file limit. You can register for a one-off fee ($20 I think) and for that you get 100MB, larger files allowed (5MB I think) etc. They also have a great forum and support. They'll solve any problems you have and answer any questions.

Hope this helps.

Angel Towns (http://www.angeltowns.com) have been around for a while. I think they stopped accepting new customers a short time ago while they were updating, but yes I think they have just started accepting again.

BTW, the one-off fee for a registered account (which gets you 100MB rather than 50MB, plus some other goodies) is only $10.

Bargain if you ask me, although I do only have a free account at present.

How does Freewebs make any money? Hoping you'll upgrade to premium? They don't have any banners or popups.

PeOfEo

They try to hook you to them, then if you need to upgrade you will come to them. They give you very little bandiwth so it does not cost them too much and they do advertise, they have a little this site hosted by freewebz on your pages.
