Selection to Layer in Photoshop

If you select part of an image in photoshop with the magic wand, freehand selection tool, etc., is there a way to promote that selection to its own layer? If so, how?

This might be the long way, but I'd just select, create a new layer and then fill the selection in that new layer as a placeholder.

Make your selection, make sure the layer selected is the one with the content, then CONTROL-Shift-J or Layer>New>Layer Via Cut
