The church has asked me to make a separate page for their program that deals with compulsive behaviors due to past hurts (drugs, alcholol, addictions, behavioral issues etc)

It follows the 12 faith based steps.

I know the layout is really plain right now, but I don't know what to do with it. None of the links are set up as of yet because I want to get the basic layout down.

Please tell me how I could make this page look less cartooney and plain.

I would replace the bright blue border with something more sober, perhaps a shade of gray between the two grays you're already using, or to keep a hint of blue perhaps use border-color #88C

Plain is good! But there's a sea of lightgray around the inner text divs - you could maybe make the text area expand so there's less empty space in the main part of the page

The text in the header image looks a bit pixelly, it could do with some anti-aliasing. And the shiny curvy effect seems out of place when the rest of the page sports no such effects.

I made some slight changes in the coloring and in the banner graphic.

I just dislike it when pages look so flat.

I was thinking about adding some gradients but I don't know how that would make it look.

I want to go for a peaceful look trying to represent a place to let your cares melt away. I mean, that's why compulsive people do what they do right? To escape their cares?

I'm not good at making background graphics, especially since there's no way to change the size of a fixed background, so I was wondering what small elements could I change to make it a little more dynamic. Not so much that it becomes chaotic, but some slight hints that make the page itself a little more enjoyable for the eyes, but keeping it professional.

I'm going to go in to change the text box sizes here in a bit. I forgot when I was in there editing.

Okay, I made some final changes to it.

My family here says it has improved a lot. I included some of the suggested changes. What ya think?

It's a lot easier to look at now to be sure, you have a good starting point. It will doubtless adapt as it grows ...

good luck

Your left menu is not clickable! I checked this in FF3.

I know. That's just the layout. I didn't want to get to work on all the other pages if the layout itself was bad. And I'm waiting to get the content from the leaders of the program so I can add it to the page.
