I got this letter (see attachment) from the domain registration company that my web host uses to register the domain name we use.

As if economic woes from the colapse of the US subprime markets wasn't enough, now US companys are stabbing their clients in the back by trying to rob its client base of income by by-passing them and going straight to the customer.

I can tell you that I was not only angry at the attempt to dupe me out of money but I was also surprised at the underhand method they employed in making out I was going to lose my domain if I didn't cough up...

Has anyone else had a letter like this from a domain name provider? I sent a copy to my host who was not to pleased at finding out that the domain people were not only poaching customers but also charging them double what they would pay the web hosting company.

Stay sharp if you own a domain name, pay special attention to when it actually expires and contact your existing host if your not sure on any literature you get through the post on your domain name claiming that its about to expire, etc.

This has been going on for a very long time. Nothing new or related to recent economic woes...

Actually I would disagree, having had several domains, this has never happend once, I have had reciepts and notices confirming that I own a particular domain but never a demand for money or I lose the domain.

We get them all the time (and have been getting them for years). Ditto for automobile warranties, copier maintenance, long distance accounts, etc.
