I purchased flash 4 recently for a decent price but I have not opened the box. Is flash 4 as obsolete as I have read? I am totally new to flash. It is primarily to play with and to produce the odd website with some nice flash graphics. Having said that though I do like some bang for my buck and to cover the bases. After reading some comments though I'm not sure I should have tried to get versions five or beyond especially after learning that the upgrade to five is apparently not available for version 4 users. Any comments?

Haven't used version 4, but I have heard the same thing for years. Why not go to the newest version? If you are considering an upgrade anyway, spend the money up front. You'll get a much-improved product right from the start.

I don't know about graphics, but IIRC the ActionScript language went under pretty major revisions between 4 and 5, so if you want to do anything interactive you will be much better off with a newer version.

Scripting sucks ass in Flash 4. It wasn't until v5 that they added an "expert" mode to actually allow to freely code without choosing from drop down menus.
How much did you pay for it? Around $20-$30? More than that, too much.
I've you've never used it before, and you want to learn it might be good enough.
The thing, if you start to get good you'll wish you had MX!
