Hello, I'm looking for a virus scanner that can scan your computer for viruses, Trojan etc. On top of that I would like it to have the option for scanning individual files and if there is a virus in the file, especially a compressed file it would just remove the virus\Trojan. I did a Google search but because there are so many I want to find the best one their is.

I've been happy with Trend Micro's Housecall in the past for deep scanning.

Can you scan your computer, plus upload individual files to scan and if something is found it will remove the virus\Trojan for you and then you can download the clean file?

I haven't used this for quite a long time, but it scans your drive then lists any viruses or other such problematic files it finds and lets you choose if this is something you want deleted/fixed. AFAIK, all it does is scan and delete/fix straight from your drive rather than uploading anything to the scanner. Much like Avast or McAfee or or AVG or Spybot would scan your machine, but it's an online engine that performs it, and from my experience, finds things that many of those virus/malware scanners still miss.

Having tried lots myself, AVG is a very reliable scanner.

What do you mean by "...scan files too as well as my computer."?
When a virus scanner scans your computer, it is scanning all (or selected) files to see if any of them are of an illicit nature.

If you mean files stored on, say, a CD, you can always select the drive in which that medium is located to scan it instead of/in addition to your hard drive.

As far as virus scanners go, if you want one that is strictly online, TM's Housecall is the only online one I've used, and I do recommend it. There are probably others, but that's the one I know.

If you're looking to put free virus scanner on your machine, I have used AVG - it's ok, but I found the constant updates and the method by which they are done was too annoying. Avast is what I use now, and it's automatic updates are less obtrusive (IMO). But either can be downloaded free, and likely work as well as each other.

Can you upload a file on AVG and have it scan a compressed file and remove anything within the compressed file that shouldn't be there ?

AFAIK AVG is only software you can download to install on your computer. Also, AFAIK, NO ONE is going to let you upload infected files onto their servers. Is there a reason you can't just scan the files in question while they reside on your computer or storage device and let them be cleaned that way?
