Winblows Vs Linsuxs

Yep, you heard right.

At this moment in time I am not impressed with either of them. Microsoft for trying to extort money out of me and Linux for the lack of help that seems to be thrown at others on silly issues. Thought Linux people wanted Windows people to convert? Think support is the issue and why M$ is still No.1 in the field.

All I can say is if you need to "Repair" your computer with a "Repair" from a genuine windows disc SP3 on an older machine install of a Genuine windows XP but say SP2 for arguments sake... DON'T DO IT.

My inital thought was to get linux and get it over and done with. How wrong could I be. Linux is if not as stressful as microsofts pile of. Despite passing all hardware tests except my lappy's, Ubuntu will not install, it refuses to partition any drive I try to get it to partition to do an install. It insists on having a 10Gig or more drive despite it installing in to about 2.5Gigs.

So in T-5 Days, my main machine I use for everything is going to cease to function, Ubuntu refuses to function.

Suggestions? (and yes I have tried partitioning under windows and it also refuses to partition and it is defragged and more than enough space on it...)

Why are you trying to repair windows?

Aside from pointing out that you tried to repair a windows install with the wrong installation media, you really haven't provided any information that people can use to help you. That was your first mistake. Don't try to "repair" a windows install, usually it is a futile effort. I've never seen a windows install magically get fixed using a repair install. Do a new installation after backing up your data.

"refuses to partition" does not help.

It seems like you are trying to dual boot and resize your partiton so you can try linux without losing data. Try backing up your data and, or installing onto a new hard drive fresh and you will have a better experience with Ubunutu.

I hate to say it, but you sound way to impatient to try out Linux. Ubuntu is probably the most user friendly distro out there, but there are still many caveats that require in-depth research in forums, wiki's and google to fix.

If you have no way to back your stuff up, boot to a CD of any type (Ubuntu Live boot would work) and rename your c:\windows, c:\documents and settings, and c:\program files to something else. Then do a full re-install of windows and update it to SP3. If that is not possible on your computer, you are either severely infected by malware or have some type of hardware problem.

The point is the windows OS worked fine up until 20 weeks ago when the machine stoped recognising devices plugged in to the USB and the DVD-RW and other things like plugging in the broadband would result in a BSOD or the other Fatal Error Blue screen.

I tried to find the cabs, no cabs, its an oem, so I looked for a hidden partition for the repair, the link exists but the partition does not! The only option I had was to run the repair because directly forcing the OS to update the drivers from a "Clean" set of windows cabs did sweet FA.

I throw in an Ubuntu Live CD and guess what, USB works fine, DVD-RW works fine, everything works including the boradband modem... Work that *ucker out.

So I went and tried to partition the drive, not for a "Dual" boot but to create a partition that I could move all the data I wanted to keep and windows programs that I have found really useful as I still have several other windows machines.

Ubuntu partitioner refused to partition the drive despite allowing me to make the settings and it wet off and merrily tried, came back and complained about the drive not being accessable.

I am going to go and buy a hard disk, it is going to be the easiest option all around, if Ubuntu refuses to install, ***k em, I'll pay microshaft for it effing licence AGAIN!

Funny all this sort of crap kicks off during a recession!

weird that. i have been on ubuntu for ages with no issues to speak of...i had to switch from MS cuz my pc was so old (only 512k of ram!) it would only run linux...and a lot faster i might add. Don't give up hope...sometimes they don't play well together. i hate computers.
