I'm keen to get into Joomla. I've done the lynda course and I've messed about with the package, but I'm having a really hard time in working out exactly how to start.
I know that might sound stupid, but I get the whole back end - here's how you edit text, here's how you add a picture, etc. That's not too different from the wordpress sites I manage, but it's getting the initial structure in place that I'm really struggling with.
Can anyone point me in the direction of a good online tutorial or even a good book which deals with the actual "framework" and how to go about setting it up from scratch?
Thanks

Joomla is kind of screwy. I haven't found any good tutorials, but basically you need to do things in this order:
1) Create the sections and categories you want
2) Create the articles you want, placed into the proper categories
3) Install and configure any other extensions and components.
4) Create menus. Each menu link has a certain "type", like a section or category page, article page, or link to a component.
Once the menus are built, the extra params for each menu item can often change how that page is displayed.

thanks for the reply
I did some more searching and found this site:
http://www.buildajoomlawebsite.com
I paid the $10 to see the whole series of videos and they are wonderful. Simple, clear and really, really hands on
Best $10 I've spent in a long time - and, no, I'm not on a commission!!
anyone who finds this thread would be well advised to check the site out.
I watched the whole series in a couple of sittings and really feel like I'm ready to dive back in to Joomla

Yes, Joomla hails itself as user friendly, it is anything but that.
I had installed it for someone to use but about 3 weeks later that were asking how to use the thing so I had a poke at it and TBH, it may offer everything under the sun but theirs better, far more simpler and easier CMS that gives same results.

i always say you got to roll your own to get what you really need, i've been working off the same base code for years and just built modules over time to do most of what i need for most scenarios and leaving room to expand.
