I have recently experienced problmes with my monitor in that after an hour os so of use, it cuts out to standby. This then increases and within 5 mins or so the only solution is to shut it down as it wont stay on for more than a second.

It almost appears like it is overheating.

Any ideas

If you have a spare monitor then try plugging that in to your video output and if the same thing happens, its the video card.

If you dont have a spare monitor but have a laptop or know someone with a laptop with VGA socket then try the monitor on that laptop and if the monitor flakes it, the issue is the monitor.

If the monitor is a CRT type like a portabble TV, then your not going to be able to have it repaired as they make them like TV's and are not meant o be repaired these days. Thats why TV repair shops are in huge decline or out of business.

If that is the case, now is the time for a newer energy saving TFT type.

TBH anything over 19" is an over kill on a PC unless your going to be sat 20ft away, a friend got himself a 22" job and he hates it because it actually distorts images even though it set up correctly.

Depending on where you are in the world, in the UK the average price of a TFT can range from as little as £59 to £899, Mine cost me £50 because it was out of a box and end of line and does the job nicely.

If your video card is shot and its on-board video, simply stuff in a new video card in to the machine, check what type your board takes and DO NOT confuse PCIe for PCI, they are completely different standards. If your board is old, it is very likely that you could have a AGP slot and PCI slots. Newer boards carry PCIe and PCI but generally not AGP.

If you are using your video fr gaming then your best to shop around for a really fast one that has got a nice RAM bundle.

Good luck as it cost me 4 video cards to find one that worked when my video card for my main PC fried itself. Remember, the guy in the shop is just intrested in a sale, be sure that you buy the right on first off because they generally do not accept opened product back! So spend wisely.
