I have spent a great deal reading up on how to fix this. My problem is that I can't access anti-virus web sites. I have run anti-malware and it finds nothing, but also I can't update the definition for anti-malware as the malware that I have on my system is preventing it, does anyone know how to remove this malware so that I can access anti-virus sites or certain other sites again ? I'm getting really at wits end.

Have you tried free downloadable versions of malware removal tools like Spybot, CWShredder and/or Ad-Aware? Alas, sometimes you need more than one tool to remove all the malware with which your computer can become infected.
Also, it's not a bad idea (if you don't have it already) to install Hijack This. That program will give you a "printout" of everything running on your machine, and if nothing else, you can find forums dedicated to helping people with malware problems, and by posting that printout, sometimes experts can pinpoint what exactly is causing you problems. That can go a long way to making sure it's eradicated correctly from your machine. (Although unless you really know what you're doing, be very careful with Hijack's ability to remove files - if you delete the wrong thing, you could be hosed.)

I got the malware\viruses removed thanks to a little clever thinking and Avira.
