Hey guys,

I am looking at getting hosting for a social networking idea I have in mind.

I heard about Joomla! and I think that would be a powerful enough tool to help me create a social networking site. I might be wrong there maybe better software out there for creating the next facebook/myspace. If so please let me know about it and also which host has the best tools to help me accomplish this.

I am not the greatest at web design or code. I know a little tiny bit more then the basics. But my main goal to is to put my ideas on the web and see if they stick.

Please help me in my quest!

Thanks,
treepop

It's hard to respond. If you are creating the next MySpace of Facebook then you should write it from scratch and not use an existing content management solution and you should be using your own servers.

Barring that nearly any host will do. You can just move up the chain as your traffic builds.

If Joomla is good really depends on how well you know how to work with and manage it and what you are doing exactly. . You can build a social network using an ecommerce program as your platform you wanted to. I wouldn't recommend it but you could.

Yeah.....you said pretty much what I was thinking...I guess.....I dunno, I want to see if my idea catches on....then move up the chain on hosting and then redesign the site based on the needs of the community......

I looked at ning.....and I really HATE the idea of them owning my data....I break the TOS or peev them and boom I loose my business.....thats scary :(

I think elgg might be the way to go for right now....seems like it's not the greatest, but workable and flexible...and I wouldn't have to spend all of my time reinventing the wheel with a community I am not 100% will get the traction I am looking for/ nor know if I have the energy/resources to pull this thing off....it's quite a big idea I have and will be a huge undertaking :) ..plus open source rocks socks....

I also am looking at Lovd by Less....I like that it uses Ruby on Rails...

anyone here use either?

If your going to create the next myspace/facebook/bebo or whatever then at some point your going to have to be prepared to pay the price for it. And this will not be cheap.

However, there are literally thousands of sites out there who want to be the next myspace/facebook so before you spend any cash at all id make sure you do plenty of market research to make sure there is a significant demand for what your offering.

And finally back to your original question. I recommend media temple (www.mediatemple.com) or if your in the UK then ehosting (www.ehosting.com) is one that ive used a lot without any problems.

Hope this helps.
