Why is it necessary? Illustrator handles vector images better than Photoshop.

Illustrator as far as a web standpoint is only really helpful when creating objects for flash animations / large scale logos.

ImageReady / Photoshop will handle all other web needs.

I disagree, Illustrator is also better for rendering type than photoshop. Anytime you're making a graphic from text Illustrator is the better choice. but why are you discussing which program is better than which? they all have their strengths and since cs 1 they all play very well together. You can import illustrator files into photoshop files and still be able to edit them in illustrator.

Simply for website creation, a general user will get far more out of Photoshop then they will Illustrator.

Depends on what they are doing. If what they are doing requires allot of bitmap photos, then use photoshop. If they're using flat or gradient shapes and vector illustrations illustrator might be easier. Neither photoshop or illustrator are very good at dicing up web graphics. Luckily I don't have to choose between one or the other because I bought the Creative Suite that comes with both.
