a login question

I have a three part question.

1. what is the biggest advantage for a login situation on your site? Is it just for password protection. I mean, I see some sites with it that dont have anything of real value to hide anyway.

2. How do some sites you go to, make you log in each time in order to access certain pages. How do they do that? How do they know you arent logged already and they can send you to the log-in page automatically. How does this work?

3. Don't you agree that Clemson is the best college in the world?

1) To restrict access to only those 'privilidged' to see it - i.e. subscribed to info, reports, stats, downloads etc
There are many sites that do this and have NO value to it at all - their usage will be drastically lower because of this.

2) Cookies and or server side scripts like PHP, ASP etc.

3) Never heard of it, You may be confused with 'Cambridge' :D
