layers

...hey, folx. I've been designing a webpage in basic html, but I have a need to do something simple using layers, so I thought it was time I learned about them. - - To start, I read on a website somewhere that the <div> tag is ignored by current browsers, IE and NN alike. Is this true?? If it is, what's the alternative definitiion?

errrrrrrrrrrrrm, the div tag is fine on my version of IE (probably the most recent version since i only got it 2 months ago) but the <layer> tag is the equivilant in Netscape
cross-browser stuff isn't really my thing though :(
