If my automatic updates are ON, why don't i get automatic updates?
My lower right yellow security icon shield (img1)shows:
"Updates are ready for your computer.
Click here to install these updates."
When I click it it brings up a Windows popup(who knows?) telling me 2 updates are ready and with two options:
"How do you want the install?.
1/Custom install 2/Express install
Why doesn't it do it automatically and how do I know the window isn't bogus? Secondly, I would prefer MS tell me what it wants to install.
Any help is appreciated

Automatic updates ON only means your computer will automatically DOWNLOAD the updates when they're available. It prompts you when the download is complete to see if you're ready to INSTALL them. This is because it's possible you may be in the middle of doing something that you don't want to be interrupted by the install process (even though most of the time it happens in the background and shouldn't interfere), and because advanced users sometimes do the custom install to enable/disable certain functions of certain updates. Also, once you install updates, sometimes you need to reboot for them to take effect, and if that's the case, you'll get annoying reminder balloons every few minutes that you need to reboot.
If you ignore the balloon saying they're ready to install, when you go to turn off your computer, you should see a little shield icon in the middle of the shutdown screen, and get a message "installing updates, do not unplug, this may take a few minutes" or something to that effect.
If you want to know more about what the updates are, switch your security settings to "Promt me when updates are ready, but don't automatically download." Your gold sheild will then give you a list of the current updates and you can opt to download or skip them, but you'll get to see exactly what's being updated. If you don't understand them at that point, you can check out MSN for more info, or just go ahead and accept them.
