Hi, I'm a newbie so I don't know if I posted this in the right section... anyways I read the sticky on "Web related careers". I'm looking to become either a Web Developer or a Unix System Administrator(I'm still debating which one I would rather do). I was wondering if some of you guys could give me a little more info about the job. (for you guys with the jobs I'd really appreciate your input!) as in hours worked per week, the salary range(entry level, salary after 5 years, salary after 10 yrs), the demand for the job...? If location info would help, I'm in PA.
For those in this kind of job, how do you like it? how are the benefits with this job?
Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

I'm decently close to you, being in north eastern Ohio. Web developers work anywhere from 15 minutes per week to 90+ hours. I've done both. In the same year in fact. Normally it's 40 hour weeks, but when projects fall behind pretty much count on living at the office.

As for salary, that really depends on what you do. Front end developers starting out might only make $30 to $40k at most. Experienced front end developers in my area make between 40 and 50k per year.

Server side developers start at around 40k and just skyrocket from there, as long as you like Java or .NET. Other people might try to tell you PHP can garner a high wage --- and it can --- but Java and .NET developers are by FAR more in demand. A senior developer with 10+ years of experience can make 80 to 100k per year, easy. Mid level developers around 60 to 80k per year.

It's when you get into large metro areas, like Chicago, Houston, L.A., New York City, Washington DC, etc, that front end developers can make 70+ per year, and its not uncommon for senior Java or .NET developers to make 120k or more.

Thanks for the info... I appreciate it! Do you by any chance know the average salary range for a Unix systems administrator?
Thanks

I have no clue what a Unix systems admin makes. Starting out, mid level and senior admins probably make close to what server side developers make. Just guessing, but you're likely to see a 40k to 80k spread between inexperienced and highly experienced.

Okay, thank you!
