Overlaying text/tables/lists over an image map...

I am designing a website for web design class here at my school and am having difficulty getting tables/text/lists to overlay my main image maps. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to do this in html/css?

Have you considered placing the tables/text/lists in AP divs, and giving them a higher z-index that your image map layer?
