I am constantly getting javascript errors. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. My homepage, Nytimes.com, has these "javascript pop-me-up" thingies which almost NEVER work. So for some reason, my system does not have the right scripts to enable them to function.
I thought the problem was with Java itself. I uninstalled and reinstalled my Java. No go. Same problems. I went to a Java enthusiast's site where I railed against Java, and was soundly informed that Java and javascripts are NOT the same things. Redfaced, I apologized for this ignorance. So it seems my problem isn't with Java but with Javascripts, which apparently are of uncountable numbers in uncountable locations. Why must Internet browsers go in search of the javascripts they need on their systems in order to view a particular URL? Shouldn't the URL tell the browser which scripts he is going to need in order for his own javascripts to function properly? Or is that too simple? Too reasonable? Too straightforward?
Other sites give me similar javascript errors, such as "object is not recognized" and other things that mean nothing to me.
If having the right javascripts on my computer is the solution (which is why I came to this site in the first place - their link icon says, "Need Java Scripts?") then the question I now have is: How can I determine which scripts I am lacking for each javascript error I encounter. And the next question is: Where and how do I get the necessary scripts?
I don't understand why so many sites that use javascripts are causing these errors. I just want to browse, and I just want these things to work properly. I haven't done anything wrong. But there's plenty wrong.
Can someone give me some pointers? Tell me what scripts I'm lacking and why they aren't automatically offered by the sites that invent and/or use them? For Java to be usable, it requires these scripts, and there's no consistency anywhere on the Internet where the scripts are concerned. It's "iffy" at best.
Thanks,
