I was wondering if it is possible to have multiple versions of the same browser on my computer. I was told by someone who is quite knowledgeable about computers that this is not possible.

Yes it is possible to have different versions of the same browser (Mozilla, Netscape, Opera, etc.), with one exception (Internet Explorer). Various workarounds for IE are available, such as using multiple partitions, but it is by no means pleasant.

If you want to download older browsers, check out http://browsers.evolt.org/.

Ah, crap. IE was the one I wanted...oh well, such is life.

Thanks a lot for your help, it's much appreciated.

Actually, if you're willing to hack IE a bit, you can run multiple versions of that browser, as well. I am successfully running IE 4 (major quirks, though) IE 5, IE 5.5 and IE 6 on the same computer/OS. Take a look at the last few posts in this thread, for more information: http://forums.webdeveloper.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17338. Also, I may contact the author of the article that I linked to in this thread (http://forums.webdeveloper.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17338#post107756), to see if I can write up an article on my findings, and the variation of his technique that I used, which made the browsers (IE 5 and 5.5) run a bit better for me. If so, I can let you know once I have done so.

using multi partitions, why not just get a second computer. I mean if you need another partition that would cause a bunch of other problems on your computer, unless you want to put lynux on that other patition anyway :). All my attempts to run an old ie with ie6 have cause me major problems, I have not had success in vieing the pages like a computer running stock ie5 with 6 on my comp at the same time. I just had to use a school comp for that. I was going to put it on my moms computer but she got mad at me and though I was going to mess it up and she would have to buy a new comp lol. If she only knew what I do to her comp without her knowing lol. I was looking for another hard drive I could borrow so I could transfer the files from hers to mine and mine to hers without her noticing a difference so I could steal her hard drive (but I am glad I didn't because a week later her hd died). Also I store a bunch of my media on her computer thru the network to conserve space on mine. I have plenty of spare space and I would like to keep it that way, I need breathing room.

Thanks, I'll check those links out, and let me know if you do so, it would be most helpful.

Currently being an unemployed 15 year old, another computer is not really in my budget... ;)

Well another partition basically means another hard drive or it divides up your hard drive and recognises it as two. It is a big pain in the butt to use one just for a browser, unless you wanted to install linux on your comp anyway in which you would be putting it on another partition to begin with. When I said another computer I did not neccessarily mean go out and buy one. I meant use a school one to view your site on, or go use a friends computer that would have an older browser on it. I view my sites from school, the school computers user versions ie 5.3 5.5 and 6 depending on if someone ever took the time to update them.

I will be doing so shortly. You can look for it sometime next week, as I'm not going to have time to write the article up this week. PM me your email address, and I'll make a note to let you know when it's done.
