rounding corners on images

I forgot how I made an images sharp corners rounded using photo editing programs. Somehow I have done this very quickly in the past and now I am taking very long to do a simple task. I drew a rectangle with rounded corners and somehow pasted the image there, moved it and resized it. Then I had trouble with the transparent bg not being transparent. I cannot seem to find any good online tutorials for any program and I have to wait until next week to buy another book. I actually do not have a graphic design book in my library, only programming books. Can anyone give me some instructions on how to do this? I would like to do it with Gimp, photoshop, or illustrator. Does anyone have a good suggestion on an image editing book? I am thinking about buying one I saw on Gimp since Open Source rocks.

In Photoshop / Imageready all you have to do is select the rounded corner box, then image > crop and make sure you save the image as a .gif or .png as they are the only file extensions that allow for transparency

Thanks for replying, I cannot find where the rounded corner box command is in photoshop, could you explain for me where I find this function and how I use it?
