I'm trying to figure out how to integrate a blog into my website. I don't just want an external link to a blog, and even the custom themes you can build for wordpress seem very limited. I want to be able to build the blog into my website and have complete control over the page.

Should I just look into building my own blog? I know basically all client-side coding, and I know PHP/MySQL...

Or is there a better way to integrate WordPress into my website?

What you can do is integrate RSS Feed Widget which automatically shows the last articles. I would certainly recommend you to use wordpress as you will never be able to develop such a good system by yourself. The design is highly customizable and I have done so over 3 years: http://www.schnaeppchenfuchs.com/blog/ and I think the result is quite good.
