How can I effectively advertise an online survey for a legitimate scientific study?

I am starting a scientific study as part of a completion of an MS program at a local institute. Part of this study involves many people completing a short online survey. This survey has its own URL. I plan on having several people complete the survey. What are some effective (and free) methods for advertising such a site?

Is it bad netiquette to advertise this in blogs and forums? It's not a business advertisement, just a scientific study.

I would like to get as much publicity as possible.
