Calculating packaging and postage costs

Hi.

I am setting up a e commerce site for a friend of mine. Question is: How do you calculate the packaging and postage costs? (I am based in the UK)

Any help?

Many companies have a flat fee, based upon the "average" cost of postage and/or packing materials needed for a delivery.

I know of only two exceptions:
- based upon actual weight, if the item's weight is known
- based upon cost: the s/h is a percentage of this cost

This has always been a huge problem with eCommerce. I develop eCommerce solutions and have struggled with this very question but finally found a solution.

I have spent the last several months working with Pitney Bowes to develop an eCommerce integrated shipping solution for our shopping cart software. From rate calculation on the front-end to printing the shipping label for the store owner on the backend. I'm hoping to deploy within the next 30 days.
