I've been using vBulletin for years (which Web Developer is using now) ... just discovered a GPLd, open-source alternative that looks fabulous:
FUDforum, at
http://fud.prohost.org/
Anybody else used it?
FUDforum seems to have all the features vBulletin has, but it's free and open-source.

But when you buy the code for a forum, like vBulletin, you can put it on your own server. When it is all on a hosted site, it can take a while to load if a lot of people are using the forums, even if they aren't using yours!

Ok... what's that have to do with FUDforum?

Naw, you download it and put the software on your own server. Just requires mySQL and PHP.

I used phpBB (http://www.phpbb.com) for quite a while, but I quite like invision (http://www.invisionboard.com/) now. Needs a little more work in a couple of places, but it's very good.
