I am looking to buy a new notebook in the next 2 months. I am really stuck between the options of a Mac book and a Windows 7 box. I am a Web Developer and have been using Windows all my life, which makes it easier for me to go with Windows. The problem is that within my budget, Ina mac book I get 2GB RAM, 160 GB HDD but in a Windows notebook I get 4 GB RAM and 500GB HDD. I have heard a lot about Mac's usability but I don't seem to have any issues with Windows until now. Can you tell me if I should go for a Mac and WHY?

Well, considering you've been using Windows for a very long time I'd say stick with it. If you switch to Mac now your going to be spending a lot of time trying to switch your brain to Mac. Time that could be spent on more constructive tasks like browsing YouTube. :p

But, you have more choices as well. Have you considered Linux? Something like Ubuntu maybe. Linux is getting better all the time and it's far more secure than either of the alternatives.

Either way, if it were me, I'd do what I could to stick with PC hardware. You have FAR more customization options with PCs. Not to mention a LOT cheaper than Mac stuff in most situations.

I can understand your worries about sticking with Windows. But, I think the whole thing with everyone saying Vista is crap is just a load of poo. I've been using Vista for quite a while now and I've not had one problem with it. I think most people who flame it just don't have a clue what they're doing and they're probably the same ones who thought XP was a POS when it first came out.

That's not even to mention that Windows 7 is looking a heap better than Vista.

Don't get me wrong though. I'm no Microsoft fanboy. In fact, I'm pretty much the opposite. I love Ubuntu. We're just not at a place right now where it can do everything I want so I'm forced to use Windows.

In the end it is your decision. All you can do is try to take in as much info about all the options as possible and try to avoid rants and just go with what feels right for you.

I hope you figure it all out. ;)

The only reason I suggested Mac was because of the customers they're gaining. More students are into art, more just want something different, and so the Mac has become popular for those who want a new look, which means designing sites for the Mac on this side of things. Personally, I would rather Windows because of it's flexibility, but today people are looking towards accomodations concerning their degrees from school or their creative careers, so the Mac has a popular feedback.

Windows 7 hands down.
I'm currently using windows 7 RC (legal release candidate) and I've gotta say that it beats the crap out of any other operative systems I've used, including win XP, 2000, ubuntu, mandriva.

how would you say it improved over Vista?

Windows 7 improved over Vista in soooooooooooo many ways that I can't even begin to describe them. The new task bar alone w/ jump lists makes things really simple. On my laptop that was running XP, 7 feels way more responsive and faster than XP did. Been running 7 on it since the beta, right now on x64 RC and it's just fast.

7 hands down. But I'm not bashing on OS X, was thinking about doing a dual boot with OS X, but that will take about 2 days of reconfiguring...

Thanks people. I am going with Windows, I can't really imagine how I'll manage without all the packages we get for Windows. And viruses are not an issue, as it is generally said. Some smart browsing and a few precautions keep Windows safe.
