is there a way to target a javascript??

does any one know if there is a way to place a target for a java script in one section of a table and write the actual script in a different section of the table where there is more allowable space?

here's what I'm attempting;
trying to fill in info on a profile that has a short tag line area (about the amount of space to type the subject line for these forum posts)
since there is a limit on how much can be typed in the specific area and no limit in other areas on the page I need to know if theres a way I can write my code so that it will either cause the script to be viewable in the area I want it to be in or to cause text typed into that area to do what I want

so in short is thereany way to specify that one table area is a target for a srcipt written in another are?

any one have any clues on this? it's very much past my skill level thanks!! Brianna
