How to use clips

I have seen codes where in the <style> tags use something like:

clip:rect(x,y,z,w)

How many type of clips are there, and what are those numbers that are inside the parentheses?

In CSS2, the only valid shape value is "rect (<top> <right> <bottom> <left>)".
