CSS: How to keep background image fixed?

hi thanks in advance for looking.

i was wondering if i had a background image and didnt want it to scroll with the website how could i achieve this? i noticed some sites, for example with an image in the background that was no longer than 800px vertically yet the site scrolled well over 2000px, but the background image never stayed relative to the position of the actual site... can anyone help me. thanks!
