Membership Registration System

Hello all,

Firstly I must ask your indulgence if I am in the wrong forum. I couldn't identify a more apprpriate one.

I am looking for direction (even if just to the correct forum).

The site I am building requires that there is a membership registration function and I would like to know where I should go to find details on how this can be done.

I am not in the position of being able to buy a solution so I need to know how to do it myself.

Any guidance would be very much appreciated.
