Flag Web Server Log End User Has Left For URL

How would I setup the javascript such that when a hyperlink is clicked on in the browser: (1) a dummy read is done to the web server so a log notation is generated that the end user has clicked on the hyperlink and (2) how do I then exit to the URL of the hyperlink?
