Just built a website. 1 page,.. simple stuff. Used Dreamweaver 8 Pro. Got a domain name. Paid for hosting on web. Uploaded site. Perfect. Made some changes on the site - uploaded them. Working like a charm. Today I had a few more tweaks to make and.. Oh Oh trouble. Here's is what I did:
In dreamweaver
I went to SITE > Manage Sites

Chose my active published site
Chose EDIT
Catagory REMOTE INFO
Entered LOGIN name
Password
Clicked on OK
Clicked on DONE
Clicked on button that Show remote site and local files
Clicked on the icon that looks like a plug

Up to this point this is what I have always done. no issues After clicking on the plug icon I get a popup box stating background file activity but this time I also get the following error message:

An FTP error occured cannot make connection to host. The remote host cannot be found

Just before that I got a popup box that said

The cache will now be recreated because the name, root folder, HTTP address, or cloaking settings of the site have been changed.

But I did not change anything I am the only one using this computer. What this means is I have no input to my site. Does anyone know what could have gone wrong? How to fix it? TIA to anyone who can educate me to what is happening. Alny

Are you still having problems with your remote server?

Yes I have called the company hosting the site. THey say it is working fine. I can call up my site with my browser but I can not "get into" the site to make changes. I get the messages that I mentioned in my post. Simply will not let me gain access in order to upload any changes to the site.

Well it's not your hosting account, it sounds like you altered something in the site manager. Goto Site -manage sites-"yoursite"-click edit click on advanced tab and make sure everything looks gravy. Make sure enable cache is selected. Try this let me know if your still up the river I use dreamweaver cs4 but im pretty sure their pretty similiar in regards to site management. Good Luck -J:cool:

SOLVED!! What a moron I am!!

Here was the problem, in the REMOTE INFO section I was typing in my website's full address i.e. http:// www. (then my site's name (.com) in the ftp box. Deleted the "http://www. portion" and it worked perfectly. A sincere thanks to everyone who read the thread and tried to help. I just pecked away at it (and did a GOOGLE search " dreamweaver ftp error" ) got lots of results and figured out what was happening. ( what I was doing wrong) Thanks again guys. I feel that I have made progress because instead of freaking out as I used to, I now look at these issues as "opportunities to learn something" Was "down" - no access to site - only a day. Guess I am getting a bit of confidence but I am still a pleeb!!
