.fla is Adobe Flash. You would need a Flash editor to compile the .fla into a .swf for embedding into a web page.

Would you happen to know where I could find a Flash editor, or the names of any of the Flash editors? Thanks.

OR....
all you folks that are NOT so dedicated to Adobe and are still wanting to develop .fla and .swf might want to give FlashDevelop (http://www.flashdevelop.org) a shot.
OpenSource and free as in "freedom" and free as in "beer."

FlashDevelop is good for ActionScript editing but you won't have any luck with an FLA. It's not about dedication to Adobe so much as Adobe makes the only competent FLA authoring tool. I can't think of any off the top of my head that I'm positive will be able to open an FLA, but SwishMax is another SWF authoring tool. SWF is actually an open format so it's disappointing there are still no good alternatives to Adobe Flash Pro.
