Alright was wondering if any of you web designers out there could help me out. I'm trying to decide which keywords to use for my site, but I really don't know how it all works.
Like would it be better to have: "game, game development, game programmer"
or would this be better: "game, development, programmer"
Like I don't understand how search engines use this so any insight would be really awesome.
My website is: www.berathen.com
If you got any advice on what keywords I should use I would really appreciate it. I'm very new to this all.

You'll never rank for "game" so don't even bother putting just that word. Not only that, but you'll have a really hard time ranking for "game development" without a lot of work. Pick a couple game genres and try to rank for those first "Action Game Developer, Strategy Game Developer"

Hey! Nice to see another developer here :)
For search engines two main things matter for on page seo.
1.) Keyword density
2.) The keywords
You should use tools, like googles keyword selector tool, to find keywords/keyphrases that relate to your page to be optimized. Find the keyword/phrase that has a lot of searches in total, then search for them on google... doing this you'll find which keywords/phrases give the most traffic but have the least amount of competition, go for those keywords. You can also use the long tail keyword selection method, if you're interested google for it.
Keep in mind that order of wording matters. Seo is not just throwing a bunch of related words on a page together, it is finding the best combination of words (aka phrases) and optimizing for those. Once you have your phrase/words selected you'll want to place them on your page in the page title tag, and within an h1 tag. Unless you have a ton of words on a single page, that should be sufficient to give you optimal keyword density for that phrase on the page.

first see your competitor sites that what keywords they are using and how they are using after that choose easy and less competitive with 3 words carry keywords and rank on them.

I would recommend not looking at what the competitors are using, or if you do to not put much credence to them... doing otherwise is assuming they know what they're doing. But more often than not when i look at a client's competitors, they almost always are just ranking by luck, as the on page seo is completely all over the place, probably being helped mainly by anchor text from inbound links more than anything else.
You really want to start your keyword/keyphrase search from a blank slate, otherwise you may unintentionally lead yourself down a less optimal road due to preconceived notions gleaned from bad info like your competitors keywords.
