There are a few programs you can get that will do this for you, but windows 7 has the ability to do this for free.
You can "shrink" the current volume to make room for another partition. Because of the way windows works, you will not get all your current free space available for a second drive, so just remember that when you see the results.
The process:
Control Panel / Administative Tools / Computer Management
Choose Disk Management from the left side. You will see a list of drives and see your main C: drive listed. DO NOT change anything that is "System Reserved" or "Recovery" or anything else that you do not recognise as these are crucial "hidden" sections of the drive!
Right click on your main drive and select "shrink volume" After a test, windows will let you know how much you can shrink it. If acceptable, select OK and go have a couple of hot drinks.
Any unallocated space can be made into another partition.
TIPS : To make the volume shrink the most it can, remove all junk from your drive (temp files etc.). Use "Disk Cleanup" to remove "system restore and shadow copies". If you know how, change your swap file to 0 and turn off your recycle bin. Remeber to change these back after your done.
Reboot your computer. Run a full defrag. Reboot again, then shrink your drive.
Just do as many as you can. Anything you are unsure of, just leave as you do not want to mess up your computer.
Hope this helps.
