I work very hard at doing my best to keep from being spammed as I know we all do, using all tricks I can find. And while I do surf, I have never of all the folks in my company gottten onto anyones spam list. But I sign up for this forum yesterday and less than one day later I start to get spam. Whether it's "the system" or some pervert who makes an extra buck or two for evrey "new" email address he (or she) sells, it stinks.
People who sell to spammers and spammers themselves ought to do humanity a favor. Go buy a gun, drive to the nearest hospital emergency entrance, fill out a organ donor card and shoot yourself in the head. Then you will perhaps have contributed to society.

I feel it is extremely unlikely either Jupitermedia (the company which owns this site) or any of the administrators would support spam in any way. The forum system does not even make your email address visible, so it cannot be harvested.
To help with your spam problem, you might try the excellent MailWasher, from http://www.mailwasher.net/.

I really don't get the whole spam issue. I don't take any precautions against spam, I sign up for stuff all the time -- usefull stuff, mind you -- and I don't get any spam at all.

Coincidence I think. I've recently changed my email and have received no spam. Plus I remember signing up without any spam problems earlier in the year.

i have 3 different email accounts
1) public, forum email address, if i think i'm signing up to something from which i'm at risk of being harvested, i use this email. i do a google search on the email address, and it's found on 760 different pages. needless to say, i get a ton of spam, but if i delete something by accident then it's not the end of a world... a newsletter maybe.. bleh
2) forum alerts, i give to sites which i more or less trust, shopping orders, fairly important stuff, paypal etc, i get a spam email about once a week. i know it'll probably start to rise soon though, i'm fairly careful with it, but don't care if i get spammed too much.
i actually use it on my website, but use spambot confusers to make it fairly impossible for it to be harvested
3) only given to friends/family/important business email, every email to this account is guaranteed to be important
to get money from selling email addresses, don't you have to have millions? forums wouldn't get even 10,000 new members would they?

I've had the same sort of problem. There are some interesting points about it here (http://www.phpbuilder.com/board/showthread.php?s=&threadid=10263298)

I got a small amount of spam, but I don't think it comes from this forum.

Not unless you signed up for advertisements…
Last year I was extremely unfortunate to get one spam message but the only reason was because my Open Source Spam Blocking system was down for about seven minutes.

7 minutes? and they got to it that quickly? ouch...
what spam blocker did you use?

It's more than just the spam blocker because I use Fake Aliases and character encoding that stuffs up most current robots thus it is more the encoding than the spam blocking.
The system used include Spamhaus, which maintains a list of the world's top 200 spammers and detects their movement from ISP to ISP.
Open Relay Database and Monkeys, both organisations maintain databases allowing the company to block email sent from insecure Internet servers (Open Proxy's) which are mostly used to distribute spam and viruses.
The fourth component of the system is SPEWS, which maintains a list of ISPs around the world that allows their networks to be used to distribute bulk emails.

My e-mail get's about 100 e-mail's a day, with most of that being SPAM. but I don't care, everyone.net have a modified SPAM filter, so for any E-mail to even thing of reaching me it has to have my real name and website so I never actualy see any SPAM.
