User Management/Attendance

Hi all,

I run a local club, and am currently trying to put together a website. As of right now, the website runs fully on WordPress.

I am looking for some piece of software that I can use to manage all the members of the club - currently WordPress does not have a great interface for member management, so that won't work. I need to be able to do the following things with this software:

-Members can register and update their info via the web
-Administrators can make groups of members, allowing us to send out mass emails, and similar things.
-I would also like to have an event interface, where an admin can create an event, set out his laptop, and people can "sign in" to the event when they get there. That way we have an accurate attendance log.
-I would also love for it to be free :)

That last one I'm sure will be the hardest, but I was just wondering if anyone knew of something that would work. If nothing comes, I can roll up my sleeves and write a piece of software.. but I prefer free-already-made-things.
