Reading through the various forums I get the impression that for most members English is not their native language.

In a way, this is a reminder of the power, depth and spread of the www that makes our world a much "smaller" place today.

So just out of curiosity, I thought I would create this poll to hopefully get a feel for the cross-sectional breadth of our native countries.

My apologies to anyone whose native region/country is not listed. (there is a limit of 10 options)

Ireland. I've only noticed one other person who was from Ireland here, but I'm sure there are others.

For those for whom English is not their native language, did you learn programming through English or through another language. I speak three other languages pretty well, but I wouldn't have a chance at discussing computer-related issues, I just don't know the vocabulary at all.

Reason why I ask is Im always interested in speaking to people from AUS/NZ as we want to migrate there in the future.

Except for two or three books in my native language and an article every now and then, pretty much everything related to IT I've had read was in English (the same applies maybe to everyone with an IT job that I know personally). That's why I have no problem to understand even complex texts considered they're related to programming or a software/hardware topic in general, and yet I'm finding it very difficult to answer in English when asked: 'Would you describe your previous job in short, please?' on an interview. :)

I would think this have to do with each country education system. In my country, English is first language and used as the language for all my subjects study. This means maths, science, physics, chemistry, biology etc are all taught in English. The only exception is our second language which will depend on your race. I'm Chinese so my second language is Chinese. If I'm Indian so my second language is Tamil. If I'm Malay my second language is Melayu.

So I believe this education single first language system works well for my country. It enables us when we are working to be able to secure jobs beyond our shores to work for foreign firms with the assumption most of them uses English as the communication medium.

New York is the city where King Kong climb on top of the Empire State building to protect the lady and fight against the fighter planes? That scene is classic!

New York is the city where the Statue Of Liberty is? Are there secrets hidden within?

JPnyc

well, not anymore. Now it's just a guy in an ape suit, and you can no longer enter the Statue of Liberty to see what's inside. Cutbacks.

Am I reeaaally the only Aussie member here? or just the only one owning up to it :p:)

We had a couple of Aussie moderators a couple of years ago, but they've gone elsewhere I guess.

The major attraction I know from Australia is Sydney Opera House. Beyond that I know not much about Australia except for Perth which I visited my fren during his Uni studies there.

I check Google maps and behold, Melbourne is an urban city with lots of buildings and tell me, do you like urban city life ?

In the country I am from, we don't have much land so practically almost everyone live in city. In Melbourne suburb I believe you can still go fishing, planting etc without needing a government permit ? Hmmm.. nice place for retirement.

Melbourne's population is about 4 million now, give or take a bit. I have always lived here. I live about 20 kilometres east of the city centre towards the outer suburbs.

Melbourne's main attractions would include its cosmopolitan culture, restaurants, theatres, major sporting events, South Bank.

Why is London not on this list?
London and the UK are quite different. I am, of course, from the former.
