I installed Linux, is it suppose to be just command line (white words on a black background) or is there something wrong with my installation?

Linux is an operating system in the same way that windoze is an operating system and mac os is an operating system (to name a few). Like both these other operating systems you can use just the command line or you can use a graphical user interface.

Server versions of Linux (e.g. Ubuntu Server) are designed solely to be used on the command line and so do not come with a GUI. Linux distributions normally have a GUI managed by Gnome, KDE or XFCE (those are the main three).

So the short answer to your question is a rather rotund "no".

What distribution are you using?

I'm using EnGarde Secure Linux. It's solely for servers, so that's probably why.

Never heard of the distro, I personally only use debian and ubuntu. That would be the reason, however. What are you looking to do with your installation?

Thanks, I downloaded Windows XP and Apache instead. I'll probably need some help later on.

I wouldn't do that, working with a linux server is much better =]

Ubuntu is actually really easy to setup a lamp environment.

Download Ubuntu from: ubuntu.com
Install
Go to: System -> admin -> synaptic package manager
Edit -> Mark packages by task -> click lamp server -> click ok
Click apply
