I was reading the paper today and this article was saying that next month Microsoft will no longer give Tech Support to people whose machines still run on Windows 95 and 98!
I suppose in one way I can understand but it also seems like another ploy to force people to switch to Windows 2000 or whatever....maybe.

If you have 95 or 98 you have been on it for years because I do not see it being sold left and right. You should be a darned expert if you still run one of those OSs!

You should also be happy you're running an OS that's no longer being targeted by the worm and trojan writers. 8-) I dual boot 98 and Mandrake for that very reason.

You would use an old inefficient os because it is not being targeted by hackers anymore even though the NT oss are much more efficient and stable? Geeze its called get a nice hardware firewall.

Yes, all the latest RPC viruses cannot touch us '98 zealots. I thought 95 support was ended already, and I know 98 is on the way out, but I don't tend to use helplines anyway - I just muddle through on my own.
All the more reason to switch to GNU/Linux!

No, I use the old inefficient OS to play games and I've been running a dedicated router/firewall for years.

heh gaming from a 98, thats got to be hell. from my experience w2k3 server is the best gaming os. If you change some of the settings, like processor useage from background to programs it is very fast. It is nt based of course but it was stripped down to run faster on servers.

I run w2k on my company laptop and it's quite nice (although it's being patched constatly) but it can't run my old scsi scanner, which 98 and Linux do just fine.

About the only reason I continue to use Windows 98 SE is because I do not trust the later versions of Windows.
There have been too many cases of glitches and malfunctions.
I just want to instal it and go..I don't wish to spend an entire day trying to make everything work.
Secondly these supposedly new versions of windows have been havens for viruses and hackers..I really have better things to do that ferret ot a virus and zap it or try to outwit a malicous hacker.

why do you think they bother to make patches. Get real. Windows 98 is increadably unstable, chances are you have gotten more then a few errors saying the system is busy when you try to ctrl alt delete a freezing program. That kind of crap does not happen on nt based oss. The only reason so many bugs are found in xp and 2000 is because it is so widely used that all of the hackers target it and hacking has evolved with the computer too. If ms did not care about security they would not run windows security as a higher priority then programs and would not often realease patches fixing bugs they find. They try to keep one or two steps ahead of potential hackers. If you have anti virus and or a firewall (reccomended) you will be fine. The only way a virus can logcally get onto your computer in the scenario is by user incompetance. Lets download MP3.EXE on kazaa and see if it runs ok....
