Creating a menu and submenus

Can anyone help me. I'm new to javascript and i need to create a menu with submenus. Can anyone offer any help as to where I can find some tutorials to help me write the code or where i can find some code that i can adjust. I want to be able to create a vertical menu.

I have tried the menu builders available on the web but either i can't get them to work or i have to pay for them.

Any help would be grateful.
