I am trying to figure out how to make a interactive slideshow like on www.nbc.com or www.ufc.com or www.abc.com or www.cbs.com. I have been trying to figure it our for the past 2 weeks. I thought that they were using swf files and putting them in a slide show - but I noticed that abc, cbs and nbc slide show seems to be html and nor flash - the UFC one seems to be flash - could someone point me in the right direction to where I could find a tutorial on interactive slideshows. Thanks!

I am pretty sure they are all XML driven flash apps that simply cycle through data in the XML file using code. It is pretty basic for any flash developer to build but if you arn't all the familiar with actionscript it will take some learning before you can build it.
Here is a free third party one you could use: http://flashslideshow-maker.com/xml-driven-flash-banner.html
If you prefer to do it yourself I would pick up a book on actionscript 3 so you can learn all the core fundamentals.

For flash slide show you can consider this photo gallery software (http://gallery.a4desk.com), which comes with various types of photo album templates, including few with the slideshow functions.
