I'm not sure which major I should choose that would help me get a job in web development. I don't want to do web design (the aesthetic aspect), but I rather handle what goes on behind the scenes (the coding, database management, etc).

I was considering a major in computer science and a minor in mathematics. But I'm not sure if computer science is directly related to the work I would want to do. I don't want to build the hardware of computers.

What was your major/minor in college?

Nope. I've been in some aspect or other of the IT business for about 25 years now. :)

I'm currently majoring in Electrical Engineering... My guess is that you'll find a lot of people here have some pretty random majors. If you want to get into web development i'd stick with computer science. In my opinion you should always pick the more general degree that relates to your interest. For example, its a terrible idea to go to a game development school, for the very reason that you're then locked into that subdivision of the industry. However, if you go with the more general degree you have a lot more mobility within your chosen industry.

If you're doing webdevelopment, no matter what, take basic design and color theory. Why? Engineers and programmers SUCK at making things look good. Your products won't sell if they don't look good. You need an artist's eye.

That seems more like a web designer's job. I don't want to design websites, I want to take the web designer's design, and develop it into a working website, hence web developer. But either way I will have to take a course on Color for my major anyways.

My degree was Computer Information Systems focused in Systems Analysis, Design & Integration. I wear many hats/preform many roles though generally in the Business Analyst & Developer arenas at work. The most valuable stuff I got in school that I use daily are the techniques from the Analysis & Design classes I took. Anybody can make functional code but truly magnificent coding starts with solid analysis and design.

Trust me, you will want it.

Personally, I found that Biochemistry with a minor in Chemistry (followed by 4 years of graduate work in Molecular Immunology) helped immensely......

You don't need a major/minor directly related to the field, although it helps to have Computer Science or some IT related degree/diploma, but that's just to put on your resume. If you can show that you've got experience doing what the employer wants, then I think you're just as likely to get hired, at least entry level.
