Hey Guys,

I've been a Windows Server Admin for about 5 years now, and I've decided to change my career direction. The work is really stressful in my opinion, and I don't really get much out of it.

I've spent some time developing sites for friends, and some small jobs at the place I currently work at, and have really enjoyed it. So I'd like to at least start investigating this career.

All tech stuff aside, my number 1 want out of my next job is something with only low/moderate stress. I'm sure this can depend on the job, but I'd like to get your best opinion :)

So do you feel a web dev career is high stress?

Thanks guys,
Mike

It depends on how closely you have to work with people. If you can get precise specifications of what they want and what you can deliver, it's not bad. If you are constantly asked for new features and have to continually tailor your code to accommodate them, it gets harder.

Makes sense, thanks. How are the working hours? You don't ever have to wear a pager, or cell for this kind of job right?

Like Declan said, it can be really stressful, but it depends how you (or your boss) decides to handle their clients. If you (or your boss) handles your clients as in - if you notice anything/want any changes, just give a shout 24 hours a day and we'll stop whatever we're doing and do exactly what you want! - then it's stressful....very stressful.

In my experience, most jobs in IT are stressful, for the simple reason that most IT jobs are under-scheduled for any variety of reasons (market pressure, poor requirements analysis, clueless managers, and so forth), so more often than not, at some point virtually every project runs up against deadlines. This usually means unplanned overtime (usually unpaid in this this business), bringing in additional people (who don't know what they're doing, so someone who does has to spend time bringing them up to speed), and people who don't handle pressure well not handling the pressure well. :)
