My 11 year old daughter spends hours making animations using Windows Movie Maker.

She has expressed interest in learning Flash, but really likes the drawing/animating aspect more than the programming aspect. She's also a very visual person that likes to learn through videos rather than reading.

Does anyone know of any simple video tutorials that could help her get started learning Flash or something similar that might help her develop in this area?

Also, I use mostly PHP and Javascript and am not extremely familiar with Flash. Is it really necessary to spend hundreds on software from Adobe, or is there similar software available that isn't quite so pricey?

Thanks!

The real strength of Flash is creating animations for delivery over the Internet. If the animation is being created for other purposes, there may be other, cheaper programs that would work just as well. However, if you do choose Flash, there are a gazzillion tutorials available over the Internet. Here are 3 very popular sites:
www.gotoandlearn.com
www.flashkit.com
http://www.kirupa.com/developer/flash/index.htm
One advantage of using the actual Flash program is that she would be learning a valuable skill useful in the real world. I would advise against learning to use a Flash knockoff, since they are not the same as the real Flash application and sometimes do not integrate with other web applications as well as the real thing.
