I keep reading that somewhere between 10-18% of all browsers either don't support JavaScript or have it turned off. I never read why. Obviously there are some people that won't upgrade their old browsers either due to lack of computer skills, or because they think Netscape 2 rocks. But there's got to be more to it than that. There must be people that actively disable JavaScript on purpose....why? Is it disabled people? Does JavaScript pose problems for people with certain disabilities? Are there new browsers that still don't support JavaScript, like the text only browsers, or wireless browsers? Who is this 10-18% that don't use JavaScript?

Most people that disable Javascript do so out of security (actually privacy) concerns. Some folks just don't care for the average superfluous Javascript eye candy and pop-up highjinks. In a smaller number of cases, the Javascript probably interferes with some kind of accessibility software the user is running. Finally, a very small number of browsers simply do not have a Javascript implementation.

Is it disabled people? In part, yes. There must be people that actively disable JavaScript on purpose....why?Popups, mouse trails, attempts to change your home page, sites that try to strip away your browser features (toolbar, right-click, copy), etc.Does JavaScript pose problems for people with certain disabilities? So long as your site is just as usable without JavaScript, no.
