You can check out Homesite too, I downloaded the free trial a few days ago and I like it a lot.

Unfortunatly, HomeSite is not free, but yes, I'd highly recommend it, if one is willing to spend some money. I personally prefer Dreamweaver MX 2004, due to the ammount of PHP work I do, and it's excellent support for that. If free is a must, HTML-Kit would be my top recommendation.

Ya know, just as I noticed you had posted a reply, and I had clicked on this thread, I realized that Homesite isn't free. :o

Homesite is also now a bit out of date unless they've rolled some of the new stuff from Bradbury into it. This (http://www.bradsoft.com/topstyle/index.asp) is the latest from the guy that wrote Homesite and it looks very impressive. The CSS-only editor is available free; the full up CSS/HTML version is only about $80.

I'm going to check out HTML Kit.

Except for Websphere Studio the main HTML editor I use is 1st Page, which you can find at http://www.evrsoft.com. Its real-time preview is great for working up CSS and Javascript.

There's also a free 30 day trial for Dreamweaver MX 2004, but again it's not a free program, it runs about $400 I think. Like others said, if you want a free one, get HTML kit.

I assume you are talking about a point-and-click web page builder. Try Mozilla Composer. It comes bundled with the Mozilla browser at http://www.mozilla.org/ and is something I've had other people use when I'm not going to do the upkeep on a site.

Sorry. I see Dreamweaver or Frontpage and automatically think WYSIWYG and not code view :P

Too bad Mozilla composer doen't include a full Doctype and thus puts some browers in quirks mode.

If you are looking for an HTML editor, I personally recommend 1stPage 2000 v2.0 (http://www.evrsoft.com/download.shtml). It's 100% free, comes with a variety of pre-programmed scripts(not that any of them are usefull for anything what-so-ever), and it color-codes the HTML, making it a lot easier to edit. Hope this helps,
