Is it an offline web page, and do you have an active internet connection. If you are not connect or loose your connection ie will try to dial one by default.

i'm sorry, i really don't understand because that website was the only one that was behaving like that.
never happened before and i'm on a wireless connection to a routed dsl line.

Do you have ie set to never dial a connection? Post a link to the site please.

yes, i have it set to never dial a connection.
i can't link, cause i don't remember what it was, but i still remember all the details:
it creates a "default" named connection that dials **** as the line number in network connections, paired with my usual dial up (if wireless fails, i use this), it dials that, the usual dial up sounds, connecting, strange noises, then nothing, disconnected.
i'm only worried about it showing up on the phone bill, i'm pretty sure it didn't connect though

does this site use an applet, or what about ssl? Are you sure you do not have another program running, like a backdoor. Check your prcoesses. Here is an experiment under internet options go to advanced and disable ssl then go to the page and see what it does.

i don't think i had ssl enabled, no backdoor programs, proccesses are the original ones installed when windows and all the other junk was installed, no new strange processes. i can't remember if it had an applet running.
Thanks for all your help so far.

double check for viruses - there are lots of them out there aimed at connecting you to expensive dial up lines. Is this site a reliable one? as in from a large company?

as in rechecking my hard drive for viruses with norton?
ok, i'll do that, but for the first check, no spyware and no viruses.
yea, probably not a reliable site. should have been more careful.

Maybe something a little more reliable than Norton...
Panda Antivirus have a good online scanner you could try.

doing that right now, norton was expired on my computer just now.
results: "No viruses have been found!"

Letme clear this up, spyware is a process that basically supplys the interent with infor about you and your machine. Cookies, tracking cookies, are a form of spyware, that comet toolbar, is form of spyware. To get rid of spyware go to www.lavasoft.de and download ad aware 6.

probably not. If you are on a lan, why do you even have a phoneline going into your comp? I have a phone line by mine so I can have leverage over the cable company when they raise rates, I can quickly move to dsl :D , keep moving back and fourth and getting 6 months at 20 bucks. But anyways if you are on a lan why have a phone line, just seems like another way a surge can fry your comp during a storm...

i have a phoneline, just incase dsl fails or something, i can use dial up. i didn't think of the surge problem, cause it's rare.
i usually don't have it connected, only when i need it, for some wierd reason, it was connected that day.

well, why not just keep the phone line unplugged from your comp when you are not using it then you would not have to worrie about your dial up modem dialing a thing.

well, after that incident, it's no longer plugged in don't ya think?
i was only scared when it started to dial, thought the phone bill would be like 50 dollars or sumthing, so i exited the website really quick and shut down the computer (i know, i was in panic)

i'm 100% sure it wasn't a virus, probably some strange java initiated or activex control thing, and if it wasn't out to get some money, i think it was probably a hoax.
what do u think?

I think it was one of those malicious Porn Dialers or something similar........ They are not asked for and quite often disgised as something quite innocent...... beware
Mabee you should install and run AD_AWARE
http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=506&file=2&evp=8dbaff7daca8f4b55bf695220993fc0f
It is free (for non comercial purposes) it gets rid of spyware, tracking cookies.... all the bad things

even if a user doesn't use dialup as the main way of connecting, can they still be prey to backdoor programs and dialers and such?, just wanted to know.
what i mean is can they be prey to having an unwanted connection through these malwares? even with firewalls
