An interesting point came up recently when deciding on what the URLs should be on our ecommerce site - is a URL in the format http://www.example.com/some-keywords/name-of-product (where name-of-product is keywords in itself) more effective for the given keywords or is http://www.example.com/name-of-product just as effective?

My understanding was that the main domain was the most important to a degree, but not sure about the naming of the 'directory' (it will be URL rewrites anyway)

Any advice much appreciated...

Hi there,

I think there is not much difference if any because the google pagerank algorithm doesn't give that much weight to keywords when calculating the importance of the page.

SEO is more than just about keywords, may factors effect the importance of the page; backword links, internal linking and outbound links.

Here is a very good artical explaining the pagerank algorithm, formula used and an explaintion of Google's pagerank.
