The cheapest radio I've seen is $1 while the cheapest MP3 player I've seen is $15 (eBay doesn't count). Out of curiosity, which one is more complex? I'd think the radio is more complex because it has to receive the signals AND play it.

One added layer of complexity for the MP3 player is that it needs a digital-to-analog converter (DAC)* whereas the radio operates entirely in the analog domain (assuming it is not receiving/processing digital radio signals). There is also the cost for the circuits/software involved in decompressing the MP3 compressed data into an uncompressed stream of bits to be converted by the DAC, plus the MP3 needs data storage while the radio does not; so I guess I can see why the simplest of MP3 players might well be more "complex" than the simplest of radios.

* Which usually also requires additional filter circuits to suppress artifacts from the digital sampling rate (which filtering also tends to contribute to some of the audio distortion inherent in digital sound reproduction)

That would explain it. At first I though radios received something similar to a MP3 file and played it at the same time. Thanks!
