I have a very novice business question. I have a couple of clients and I built their websites about four or five years ago. I have learned allot since then and their sites are dated. Let's jus say I was using Tables back in the day. Anyway, I need more business/work and I think their sites need help. How do I approach the clients, talk them into giving their sites an updated facelift without making me look bad.
This would be easy if someone else built their site originally.
Thanks in advance for your help.:)

Tell the truth. The technology has changed drastically since then and you're actually doing them a favor by letting them know. I don't see how you would look bad simply for using the technology that was prevalent at the time.

Hi,
Maybe turn it into a contract to update there site every 5 years or so to be inline with new technologies?
You can maybe push the old security issues around old web technologies angle?
Offer some new functionality that you think maybe help their business?

Thanks, I like pushing the new technology angle. Good idea.

I would like to FIRST of all say 'THANK YOU' for turning the tables (so to speak) into divs! I think you can never go wrong by appearing to care about a customer/client in the past. You could also mention that the sites need to be updated for compliancy (Section 508, or just plan web standards compliance). I feel as though customers deserve the best we can offer, and explaining that the standards have changed with new technology (better blind printer/readers for example and even mobile technology). You might even be able to chance adding NEW features such as social marketing, seo, etc..
